New Mexico legalized cannabis through the legislature in 2021 after Gov. Michelle Lujan (D) called a special session to address the issue. The legalization law took effect on June 29, 2021 and retail licenses are expected sometime in early 2022. Currently, adults are allowed to possess up to two ounces of cannabis and 16 grams of cannabis concentrate. Adults can also grow up to six plants in the privacy of their own homes. The state’s medical cannabis program, which is regulated by the New Mexico Health Department, is in full-swing with dozens of dispensaries in operation around the state.
