Cannabis legalization in Nevada

Nevada voted to legalize the plant during its 2016 general election and, as the home to Las Vegas—the tourism capital of the United States—the victory was particularly significant for the cannabis industry. Notably, Nevada’s legalization vote came just one year after the state’s medical cannabis dispensaries had opened for business, making it one of the fastest states to go from launching its medical program to a full-blown recreational marketplace.

Today, cannabis dispensaries are serving patrons aged 21 and older across the state. There are also consumption lounges opening throughout Las Vegas in the fall of 2021, with similar options opening statewide in 2022.

Cannabis purchasing and possession rules

  • Adults aged 21+ can purchase and possess up to one ounce of cannabis or 1/8 ounce of cannabis concentrate in Nevada.
  • Home grows in Nevada are generally not allowed, but exceptions are made for people who live more than 25 miles from the nearest licensed retailer.
