Cannabis legalization & industry overview

New Jersey voters opted in favor of cannabis legalization during the 2020 General Election. Following that vote, lawmakers were tasked with passing and implementing a bill to regulate the adult-use marketplace, which Gov. Phil Murphy (D) signed into law in February 2021. Recreational cannabis business licenses are incoming.

Previously, New Jersey had legalized medical cannabis in 2010 but expansions to the program were slow under the conservative governorship of Chris Christie (R).

New Jersey cannabis possession rules

  • New Jersey adults aged 21+ can possess up to 28 grams, or one ounce, of cannabis flower.
  • Adults can also possess up to five grams of cannabis concentrates.
  • New Jersey does not allow for the home growing of cannabis plants.
