New Jersey voters opted in favor of cannabis legalization during the 2020 General Election. Following that vote, lawmakers were tasked with passing and implementing a bill to regulate the adult-use marketplace, which Gov. Phil Murphy (D) signed into law in February 2021. Previously, New Jersey legalized medical cannabis in 2010 but there were many years of slow progress in expanding the program under the conservative governorship of Chris Christie (R).
