Why aren’t there more established studies about the medical applications of cannabis?

When cannabis was outlawed, it became extremely difficult for scientists to acquire the plant in order to conduct controlled studies about its medical efficacy. Under President Nixon, the federal government studied cannabis looking for negative effects to bolster its position that cannabis should be considered a harmful substance. When the findings wound up supporting the opposite conclusion, research was abandoned.
