Mood Disorders

The studies in this section deal with Cannabis’s effects on various emotional and mood systems in the body. The human endocannabinoid system, which Cannabis interacts with, is shown in research to be heavily involved in early neural development before birth and during adolescence, also considered to be key times for the development of emotional disorders and anxiety. Cannabis and the relevant body pathways are efficient ways to treat these problems.

What are Mood Disorders?

Mood disorders are conditions in which modifications of a person’s mood is the primary symptom and underlying issue. Some mood disorders include clinical depression–the most common–as well as mania and hypomania and bipolar disorder. Mood disorders can also be caused by substance abuse, and as such are often comorbid with addiction disorders.

What is known about Cannabis and Mood Disorders?

The papers indicate the human endocannabinoid system is heavily involved in emotional processing and stress mitigation and adaptation, even in adulthood. It also has effects on the body’s physical and social reward systems, a prime avenue of effect for multiple anxiety disorders. Also shown in the research is Cannabis’s effect on changes in chemical neurotransmission and changes in the Hippocampus, where memories both spatial and experiential are thought to be processed.
